Coffee Beans and Bobby Pins

Brow Pencil vs Powder

February 26, 2014

Brow Pencil vs Powder by NC blogger Coffee Beans and Bobby Pins
About two years ago, I really started loving the fuller brow
look. I never had filled my brows throughout college or grad school, but once
graduated I thought I would give it a whirl. Due to a scar, my mom has always
filled hers, so I was able to use her pencil when visiting one day. I actually
loved the effect it had – making my eyes appear larger and my blonde eyebrows
much more noticeable.
For about a year, I had been “beefing” them up using a
pencil, but my makeup artist for my wedding suggested I try a powder type
application. Since then, I have been experimenting with both and can honestly
say that I don’t think either is better than the other… just different. So here’s my opinion on the brow pencil vs powder discussion.
Before:

Here you can see on my left eyebrow I use the pencil. I use
the Anastasia Beverly Hills pencil (similar here
and here) which can be found at Sephora
or online.
Pros: the pencil
gives you complete control of where the makeup goes. It’s also easy to use and
position in smaller spots.
Cons: you need to
keep it sharp constantly and sometimes I even find it pulling some brows out
during application.
You can see that the brow pencil goes on very lightly, but
still gives the brow a lift.
I like it because it’s subtle and yet, it still makes a huge
difference in my opinion.

As for the powder choice, I use the Benefit Brow compact (here). This can also be picked up at Sephora
or online. This compact is nice because it has a brow wax, powder and small
pair of tweezers all in one (and for only about 8.00 more than the pencil I
use).
Pros: All in one
combination pack, comes with a wax which sets brows, additionally, you don’t
have to sharpen anything.
Cons: More time
consuming in my opinion since you use two different brushes, application must
be more meticulous since you’re using a powder (it could easily “color outside
the lines”).

The compact is definitely not as natural looking to me and
is better for those date nights or I want to make a statement notice. I am sure
this is all depending on color as well (I use the blonde/light brown color). It
definitely is a fuller coverage than the powder.
Overall, as I mentioned before, I use both – the pencil more
throughout the week and a fuller brow (with the compact on the weekends or when
I need a longer lasting coverage). Depending on if you’re going for a more
subtle or fierce look, I would suggest either of these products as I love using
both.
If you’ve never filled your brows before, consider giving it
a try with some brown eye shadow close to your color. I know people who just
use an eye shadow color and some wax to set the brows after, whatever works!
Do you fill your brows? What do you think of the Brow Pencil vs Powder?

I use powder. I can control how light or heavy the application is. When I use a pencil, it's just too dark & unnatural looking.

I like the look of powder, but a pencil is just so much easier/quicker for me

I often use a powder, but every so often I switch it up and use a pencil. Love this!

I have never touched my brows (wax, tweeze, etc.) but have always wanted to fill them in a little. Might give it a shot with a pencil first.
    Thanks!

I've been filling in my brows with powder without using wax, and I think it looks super natural and is easy to apply (just one step).

I fill my brows, but I actually use gel liner. I use an angle eyeliner brush and brush it on. I actually like the affect it has on my brows. The brush has looser bristles so it doesn't go one very strong, but it looks very natural. It is almost a mix of the pencil and powder. You have lots of control and nothing to sharpen! Thanks for sharing. I think I really want to try the pencil. I like how 'soft' it looks.

I love using a pencil on my brows, I tried powder once but I couldn't get it to stay on just my brow so I switched back, but I like both looks and if you can do them both well, no one can really tell the difference between the two!

Gorgeous! I've always used powder before, but I may have to try a pencil. I really love the soft effect it has!

I've been using a pencil and only been filling my brows for a couple of years – I'm a late one to the party! I am definitely a fan of a natural look and I feel a pencil helps me achieve that. I would still try out the powder to see how different I would look. Thanks for the tips!

I've only had my brows filled once when I got my makeup done, but I really loved the look! Right now I'm just totally lazy and assume a child would somehow smear them off at work, but I might need to start trying it for nights out!

I like that you still look natural in both but I think I prefer the pencil on you. I use pencil AND powder, but I too have a small scar on my eye brown and have to cover it.

I love a filled in brow! I think they both look great on you. I think it's more about choosing what "look" you're going for. I use It Cosmetic's "Brow Power" and I love it!
