…tips for dressing for a bridal shower.
With my first bridal shower coming up in two weeks (yay!), I have started thinking about what I’m going to wear (yes, procrastination). Since it’s summer, I want to keep it light and cool, but that’s about as far as I’ve come in terms of decision making. Maybe by the time Im finished writing the post Ill have a better idea of what I want…
1. If you’re the bride:
Wear white, or something light and classic. Even if it’s fall or winter, its the bride’s special time to shine and she should be easily spotted in the room full of family and friends. Guest can wear prints with ivory or white bases, but the solid versions of these colors should only be saved for the Mrs to be.

2. Stay away from black or red:
Unless it’s some type of themed shower (i.e. Breakfast at Tiffany’s LBD shower) I would recommend trying to avoid wearing red or black. Red says seductive and black just has a tendency to be a little depressing for such a happy and light hearted event.
3. Know the tone of the shower:
The best advice I can give is to know your bride. Is the bride more of a tomboy, or is she girly? Still not sure? Check out the invitation. Just like a wedding invitation, the shower invite has the ability to set the tone for the event. If it’s formal, chances are, the shower will be a bit more on the formal side and you should probably dress accordingly. Or is the invitation playful and fun? If it is, then a sundress and flats may be more appropriate. Still not 100% sure? Just call the hostess and ask!

1. This dress can be more casual paired with a pair of wedges or even flat sandals here. 2. This peplum dress is more structured and would work well for a more formal shower event see here. |
4. Dress for the weather:
Will you be outside or inside? If it’s hot and humid, you may want to wear something sleeveless and light. Make sure the fabric isn’t too heavy. However, if you’re inside a house or a rented space, the air could be cool, requiring a cardigan or blazer for comfort. Make sure to check these things so you can enjoy your time instead of worrying about being too warm or cold!
5. Take some time to look nice and most importantly have fun!
Whatever you do, make sure you’re put together for the shower. Whether you’re a guest or the bride, you should put forth some effort to make sure you look picture ready. The bride should make sure she is presentable since guest have come to celebrate her, and guest should make an effort to show the bride that they are excited for this time in her life!
Obviously these are only opinions and don’t fit with themed showers, but I feel these are pretty standard guidelines. What do you think, should the bride wear white? Should people stay away from black and red?
I am giving a bridal shower and was just wondering what to wear so this is a great post! Thanks for the tips!
thanks so much! Hope you continue to follow along!

Yes, def!!! Thank you for reading!
Personally I think as long as the bride and guests look appropriate, they can wear whatever! But I love your suggestions – the peplum dress is so cute!
I agree- just some suggestions!
I totally agree with you, good luck finding your look!

Those are great suggestions! I do love when the bride wears white, but I also love a soft blush or nude colour. Completely agree with #5! There are so many cameras around that you definitely want to look your best! I think people can forget that sometimes!

Thanks Jenny, love blush and nude as well! Maybe ill keep my eyes open for one of those when im shopping next week!
I wore cream, if I remember correctly. That was a long, long time ago. In two weeks, I'm planning on wearing camo pants and an NR cheer hoodie. Will that be ok??? π <3 you! Can't wait to see your pretty face!
Cant WAIT to see you nicole!
I dont necessarily think the bride has to wear white but I agree red and black are a bit extreme.I think I'll wear lilly π I love the peplum dress you picked and agree that everyone who comes to the shower should try to look their best the bride will have these photos for a long time! I cannot wait to read more of your posts and hope that maybe you can return the favor and follow The Preppy Student. I always comment for every comment left on my page and hope to start a friendly relationship with your wonderful blog! Happy Friday π
I agree completely! I will def. follow along!
Great tips =) I really think it's disrespectful to wear white or black to someones wedding unless they tell you otherwise. Two years ago we were all told to wear black or purple so that was one case that it was appropriate but I've been to so many weddings where girls will wear white and I am always a bit shocked!

I agree, i think its all about knowing you bride and about the event!
Great suggestions! I agree with you, the bride should wear white or at least a light color. Couldn't agree more on wearing black/red, its too bold for a bridal shower or a wedding and shouldn't be worn unless there's a specific request or color theme. I'll keep these tips in mind (especially since I have a ton of weddings to go to this summer). Thanks for the insight!!

I don't think the bride has to wear white. I think the bride should wear what she feels comfortable in. I've also seen more and more people wearing black to weddings, but usually for evening affairs. I think it's just good practice to stay away from red.
#3 is my favorite — Know your bride! I think that can really set the tone for the shower. I think sometimes those throwing the shower may go a little beyond the bride. If you know the bride, then you can dress accordingly. You don't want to outshine the bride. But I do agree that you should look nice for pictures.

I agree jessica, I think comfort + looking nice is most important. These were just some simple suggestions!
The invitation is always a great indicator in my opinion!
