The Perfect Wedding Hair Updo

July 24, 2012

As our BIG day gets closer and closer, I am still having an internal debate about what to do with my mop top. I do know one thing,  it will most certainly be wedding hair updo. Although I think wedding hair worn down has the potential to be beautiful, I am too OCD and too much of a worry wart to take the risk. What if the curls fall flat? What if it looks ratty or dull? What about the weather or keeping it out of my eyes for pictures?

…See, her hair is gorgeous, but I just know the universe would make me either look like a wet dog (possible even if you’re dry?) or a 70’s burn out. Wedding hair updo it is! I know a lot of people don’t like to wear their hair in updos because they don’t think they look good, but I have to disagree. I have never seen wedding hair updo that’s done right, make ANYONE look bad. There is something so elegant and chic about wearing your hair off your face for important events as if to say “this moment will be with me forever and I want to be visible for it.” Now, don’t go getting ringlets in your hair and pinning them to the top of your head (not okay), but do take a moment  to check out these amazing Chignon’s.

Flirty: I can just picture these types of wedding hair updo for a fabulous barn or beach destination wedding. I love the loose sophistication of each of these, and yet, don’t they seem so youthful and fun?

Classy: to me, the epitome of classy is a touch of fun, with a bit of formality. Twists, swirls and layers make up the chignons below. These chignons have just the right amount of personality to be a fun, yet slightly playful wedding hair updo.

Elegant: elegant wedding hair to me is the most formal you can strive for with a updo. When I think of elegant, I usually think of slick lines, simplicity and utter sophistication.

Now, I am not saying that a chignon can’t be a little flirty, a little classy and a little elegant- it most definitely can. What do you think? Are you a hair down bride? Or going for a little playful or classically elegant wedding hair updo?

In the next few weeks, Ill be showing you how to recreate some of these updos. For the braided bun tutorial visit here. And don’t forget to follow me here on Pinterest where you can see more great chignons I’ve pinned for special occasions.  All images via Pinterest.

I had a chignon for my wedding and loved it! It works beautifully both with a veil and a flowerpiece (I wore the veil for the ceremony and the flowerpiece for the reception). I will email you a few of my hair photos, let me know what you think!

If I had to do it all over again, I would DEFINITELY wear my hair up. My curls fell out an hour into the day, and it was crazy frizzy. Smart move. I can't wait to see what you choose!

Just found your blog! Love it…

And, i love this post! I love all of your options – I am definitely a hair down kind of girl because I think my ears are too large when it’s up (i’m so weird about it).. but since you don’t have that problem, there are just so many gorgeous up-dos. If its humid, I would definitely go hair up, because I too, am afraid of hair falling flat and curls falling out…
