As the temps continue to cool outside (at least here in the Midwest, sorry southern states), I thought it might be helpful to provide a bit of insight for fall layering.
Ever layer something and end up look like the Michelin man? Yea…it’s happened to me too…below are a few helpful hints to keep yourself from looking like a big poof ball and looking fabulously chic!
1. Opposites attract
Maxi skirt and cropped jacket? Win. Tights, shorts and a longer boyfriend blazer with boots? Win. If a piece is more structured and fitted, try balancing that out with a more flowy item or vice versa.
2. Avoid layering too much
Three layers is probably safe. You want to look fashionable, not like a linebacker.
3. Mix up your fabric choices
Silk jacket+silk scarf+silk top…too silky. Play around with the fabrics of your clothes. Mix and match different textures to achieve a polished look.
4. Pair lightweight pieces under heavier/bulkier items
5. Contrast colors
Layering in all of the same color creates a blob effect, contrasting colors usually layer the best.
6. Keep accessories to a minimal
This doesn’t mean don’t wear any, but certainly don’t throw everything but the kitchen sink into your outfit.
7. Avoid layering too similar of items
Shirt with ruffles? Do NOT put a cardigan with ruffles on over it. Try pairing it with a sequin item or something different instead.
Some great items used for layering include: scarves, vests, leggings, cardigans, blouses, and chunky knits.
That first dress is amazing!

great tips! If I am pairing an oversized sweater over a dress, I prefer that the legth of both is similar. x

The picture of the Michelin man totally made me laugh–and I sometimes feel like that if I layer too much! I'm a huge fan of scarves and pilling on light-weight sweaters.

These are excellent layering tips – I HATE it when I see layers of the same stuff on top of itself (ruffles on ruffles and silk on silk, bleh – and I love the looks you've selected, esp the one with the dress.
