I haven’t done a wedding post in awhile, so today we’re going to talk about veils. Don’t want to talk about veils? I’m sorry but too late, I’ve already clicked publish. 🙂
Think about it, one little piece of fabric that you wear on your head has the potential to be lovely or disastrous, making or breaking your entire wedding day ensemble, depending on the wedding veil styles. Oh what’s that? Her Vera Wang gown is to.die.for? Yea, until she put that thing on her head and now its the only thing I can think about….see what I mean? I don’t want to be THAT girl.
Here are some tips when searching for wedding veil styles –
1. First of all, it needs to go with your dress.
2. Be careful to get something too bedazzled, the little stones can actually cause glares in your pictures.
3. Don’t cover up the parts of your dress you want to be seen. Do you have a beautiful backless gown? Then a cathedral veil probably isn’t best for you…
4. Think about movement, will you be keeping the veil on during pictures? The Reception? Or just the ceremony. If longer than the nuptials, you may want to pick something that’s not bothersome.
5. Do you even want a veil? With all of the hair accessories today, maybe its just not for you or your dress. Are wedding veil styles appropriate for the type of wedding you’re having? Things to think about…
Relatively self-explanatory.
Here are the different wedding veil styles:
The Waltz Veil typically falls between ankle and knee.
The Chapel Veil typically touches the ground but will not have a train and lastly,
The Cathedral Veil is the true show stopper and most elegant having a long train. Princess Diana wore this, the epitome of class.
Once again, fairly self explanatory.
There are many other wedding veil styles too of course, a blusher (much like a birdcage, but sits more off of the face), two-tiered veils, poofy veils, no veils and even that odd thing Ann Hathaway just wore on her head. I’m not really a veil person and still haven’t completely decided about my big day headgear, but I do know that ever since seeing Sweet Home Alabama, I love birdcage veils and am deciding if I can pull one off with my big noggin.
What kind of wedding veil styles did you (or do you plan to wear) for your big day? Any regrets on what you wore?
P.S. Kate, Diana and Grace Kelly, can you tell I wanna be a princess?

Those are great tips. I ended up wearing my veil for the ceremony and some of the pictures but took it off for the reception. I wore a simple strapless A line dress and wore a finger tip veil. I don't think I have any regrets on what I wore since my goal was to wear items that won't go out of style. So simplicity was key for me. But then again, I didn't really experiment too much with fashion and style back when I got married as I do now. 😛 Hope your wedding planning is going well 😀 xoxo, Phoebe

I love all your wedding posts–even though I'm no where close to getting married! I'm really not a veil/traditional person, so I don't see myself wearing one…however, that could change!

Simple cathedral veil with a blusher. Made it myself. Cost $15 and took only 2 hrs to make. It is so stunning. I can't wait to wear it!

I love the look of the super long veils, so romantic. However, I personally did NOT wear a veil on my wedding day. I had a flower in my hair and that's it. I felt like a veil didn't go with my style, my dress, or the ceremony (it was outdoors by the water) and I don't regret it one bit! 🙂

I went for an elbow length veil with some understated beading in it and I am really glad that I opted to wear it – it was a last minute decision but I felt more complete with it.

My veil was a full length cathedral one, without any lace or adornments, just simple tulle. I loved having it over my face when I entered the church and then when my dad pulled it off my face at the aisle 🙂 Reading this post makes me want to get married again! 🙂

hmm the veil is traditional, but no veil looks great too… not sure! haha I think either way is good 🙂

My veil was somewhere between an elbow length veil and a mantilla lace veil. My dress had a lot of lace detailing, so I went really simple with the headpiece to make sure I wasn't going overboard. I loved it – and love all of these, too! 🙂

I wore a birdcage veil for my wedding and was totally happy with the way that it looked. My wedding was on the rustic/vintage side, so it fit with the theme, but I also didn't have to worry about people pulling it while hugging, or it getting gaught on stuff. Birdcage all the way!

I wore a cathedral length veil for the ceremony and photos and then I took it off for the rest of the wedding. I love the look of birdcage veils too but it just didn't go with my modern gown.

I thought I didn't want to wear a veil, but I wore a fingertip one because my mom really wanted me to and it was the best choice I made. I loved my veil!
Megan Maddison says
My dress was lace and form fitting – quite vintage inspired so my first thought was a birdcage veil but then I found a veil that was two tiered, laced trimmed that came just to my lower back. It was absolutely gorgeous! I think it really made my dress that much more beautiful!
My initial thought was to wear the top tier over my head as I walked down the aisle but my dad and I were so emotional before the ceremony that we forgot to do it! oh well….it's those type of memories you'll never forget 🙂

I am phasing out of photograph but I will say that the last 9 brides I have photographed have bought a veil but then for the actual wedding they don't wear it because it becomes too much of a burden and then if its windy it messes up the brides hair.

I am definitely wearing a veil when I get married, a trendy one probably but definitely wearing a veil. I am not a fan of tiara's. But I think it depends on ones personal style.

I have not given that much thought to what kind-of veil I would wear. But then again, I haven't thought much of a wedding ceremony. I would definitely want something vintage inspired. The Mantila one is beautiful.

This post is right up my alley, as a former bridal consultant and wedding boutique manager. Wether or not to wear a veil is a question that always comes up. The gown and ceremony setting generally dicate the formality of a headpiece. More often than not, brides I dressed (in So Cal) wore veils that went over the length of their gowns during their ceremony. Keeping a long line adds sophistication and femininity. Cathedral lengths also photograph well! Best Wishes!

As soon as I read the title of this post, my immediate thought was "it depends on the dress".
It's so true! I love veils, and I think if you have the perfect dress it can look stunning! But I think they go better with simple, elegant dresses!
If the dress is 'busy', I suppose a veil could be too much!
Following you, great post!

i've always been a veil girl – for me they seem to be part of the wedding dress, ya know? but, there's always the option of taking off the veil after the ceremony and switching to a birdcage or fun hair piece!

I bucked tradition and didn't wear a veil. I regret it so much. Of course I was young and immature and not nearly as fashionable or confident as I am now. If I could go back I would change probably everything, but especially the fact that I didn't wear a veil!

=) this brings back memories from when my best friend got married. She was adamant about not wanting to wear a veil but then she ended up wearing all three once she knew what they meant.

I did a more modern and shorter veil that matched the color of my dress (ivory) – it hit about the small of my back or slightly higher. I don't think I planned on wearing it the whole reception but it was so light and not in the way that I did. Can't wait to see what yours will look like!

I did not wear a veil at my wedding – and am still glad! My "something borrowed" was my sister's rhinestone hair comb that I wore in my up-do. And the back of my dress had a detachable English netting train with a flower (sounds hideous, but it was so beautiful – wish I could share a pic!), so I did not want to cover that. I would have worn a cathedral veil otherwise!
Stephanie says
Definitely wore a veil – it just screams bride! 😉 All my life wanted my grandmother to make my wedding gown but I ended up finding my dream wedding gown at a boutique. I then entrusted her to make my veil and it was one of my favorite pieces. I used peacock everything in my wedding from fabrics and bouquets to my cake so my grandmother (whom I still call my "mamaw";)) used an intricate lace that had delicate peacock feathers embroidered into it to fashion my gorgeous veil. It was a small detail that everyone probably didn't notice but I made sure to have my photographer take the necessary shots to remember its significance. It was a very special detail in my wedding day! Thanks for sharing Amy. Love your blog girl!
