Coffee Beans and Bobby Pins

DIY Coasters

January 23, 2013

Hey hey all. After the wedding, we had tons of paper product left. Cocktail napkins, programs, menus…and even though I have one of each in my “wedding keepsake box,” scrapbook AND an envelope (that I have no idea where to put), the thought of throwing all of the extras out made my heart frown.

What does a girl do in this situation? Log on to Pinterest of course!
I have actually been wanting to make cute paper coasters for awhile, I was just waiting for scrapbook paper to go on sale…enter wedding programs/menu cards.

Here is what you need:

1. Coasters. I picked mine up at Lowes. I bought 10 (which is a bit excessive). They were about .40 cents a piece and I picked 4×4 with a little thickness to them.
2. Mod Podge
3. Foam brushs, or paint brush
4. Fabric Glue
5. Paper
6. Sealer (I picked up acrylic sealer. You will only need one bottle).
7. Felt or cork for backing

1. Cut felt (or cork) into 4×4 inch squares. I measured out one and then used that stencil to cut my other 9. It doesn’t need to be exact, this is just to glue on to the bottom of the coaster to prevent surface scratches, it wont be seen.

2. Once all of the felt has been cut and glued to the back, you’re ready to start cutting your paper. Repeat step 1 by measuring the paper size you want and then cutting enough for all coasters. I laid the paper on the coaster prior to gluing to make sure I had the right sizes.

3. Once paper has been cut, spread Mod Podge on surface of the coaster and firmly press the paper over the surface. Make sure no bubbles appear. If the paper hangs over the side, now is the time to trim it. I even painted a layer of Mod Podge over the paper for extra sealing (depending on your paper, you may not want to do this to prevent bleeding).

4. Allow Modge Podge to dry. Apply sealer (two coats) over coasters. This will prevent water damage from ruining your work.

5. Allow coasters to dry overnight before using and voila! New coasters ready to use and a memory preserved!

Think you’ll give this a try?
