Before I was married and had a blog, I never really understood “styling” a home. For the past year and a half, I’ve really been trying to figure out my décor style. I don’t like to make my home too girly because it’s important to me that my husband loves it just as much as I do, but I do want it to be classic and light. Lately, I have found myself drawn to home décor pins on Pinterest and I feel like I am starting to get a sense of my design style.
I try to keep items on my nightstand that I genuinely use, and only a handful that are simply styled. Here are some things to keep in mind when setting up your bedside table:
Keep it functional. Book storage is key in our house because we have so many. I keep a few style on the shelf and top (especially ones I’m dabbling in and reading). It creates texture as well as adding some personality. My husband’s nightstand has medical books, while I tend to have more fiction and fun reads. In addition, my leaf ring holder and coaster obviously are used on a daily basis.
Add some color. The books also serve this purpose along with the faux orchid. Since our stands are white, it’s nice to have subtle pops of color to add some visual appeal.
Have one “hero” item. I think of this as the conversation piece of the nightstand. It doesn’t have to be anything expensive or crazy unique. I consider the little old style alarm clock mine. I picked it up at Homegoods for 6.99 and truth be told, I don’t use it, I just like the look of it. A vase of flowers or even a unique lamp can serve this purpose.
Mix up your height and shape. Use taller pieces with shorter pieces to create a visually appealing space. In addition, varying shapes of items also helps create appeal in such a small space.
Add something personal that makes you happy. Our wedding photo is something that makes me happy every time I look at it. It’s one of the first things I see in the morning when I reach for my alarm.

So so cute! I love this clean but personality filled look. Plus I'm a sucker for orchids. 🙂 Noticed you have Elixir. I really like those books too, though I need to read the final one. -Alexandra
