Quick Tips for a Clean House

September 21, 2014

My husband would tell you I am a bit of a neat freak. In
addition to cleaning the house once weekly, I am constantly reorganizing,
rearranging and throwing things out. While he doesn’t see the need in all of
that cleaning, I’d like to think I am rather efficient at it. Once weekly
(usually on Thursday nights), I clean the house and it only takes me 45-60
minutes typically. Today I thought I’d share some easy tips to keeping your
space clean so that when you really have to deep clean, it’s not an all day job.
I find that if you keep your messes in check, when deep cleans are necessary
they go MUCH smoother.  On the flip, I
also use these tips when hosting so that when all of my party guests are gone,
I am not left with a house looking like a war just went through it. Read about
our housewarming party (and tips for hosting) here. #collectivebias #sparklysavings

  1. Pick things up! This
literally takes maybe five minutes. Whether it’s spending the extra five
minutes in your closet every day to hang up the outfit rejects you’ve
thrown on the floor, or picking up the mail off the kitchen counter at the
end of the day, this makes a huge impact on making the house look tidy.
When I host, I am always mingling with guests, but I try to pick discarded
drinks and plates and take them into the kitchen where I quickly stick
them in the dishwasher out of sight.
  2. The kitchen is the heart
of the home, so I always like ours neat and clean. I never leave dishes in
the sink and I always leave a finish tablet in the dishwasher slot so as
soon as it’s ready, I can start the dishwasher and carry on with my day
(or when I’m hosting– mingling with my guests). I love Finish Dishwasher Cleaner’s all in one
tablets, so easy and no fuss.
  3. Once weekly, do a quick
clean. This takes about 25 minutes. In addition to picking up
lose/scattered items, once weekly if I’m not doing a deep clean, I will
wipe counters down, run the vacuum and dust. This takes me about 25-30
minutes to get through our house.
  4. Have a “do-it now”
approach. See a dusty lamp or table? Instead of saying Ill do it next
week, grab a rag quickly and wipe it down. Later when you do take the time
to clean, this task will already be done.
  5. Allotting time. Some
people work best with time frames. If this is you- simply allot a certain amount
of time to get things accomplished and whether or not you finish in that
time, stick to it. Set a timer to tidy up what you can and if you don’t
finish you can get to the remainder later
  6. Lastly, keep storage around. On our counter we have a miscellaneous basket. This is where mail that hasn’t been sorted goes or extra pens, etc. Our front door area doesn’t have a mud room area, but we do have a basket for shoes (which I clean out and take upstairs once a week) and also a coat rack/table for purses, etc. These little and inexpensive storage solutions really help!!

Good tips! I am too creative to be spic and span, but I am an organization fiend! Husband does the cleaning, I do the organizing. I'll pass your tips along!
