I read a news article the other day about a woman who got
backlash from her child’s school for sending Oreos in her lunch. The cookies
came back, uneaten with a not so nice note from the teacher. I read the news
article thinking, really? I used to eat cookies growing up, but the difference
between some people and my family was that we were allowed to have two and two
only. I remember wanting more and trying to sneak into the kitchen before
dinner to eat another Oreo, but my mother was also there to intercept me.

At
almost 30, I am realizing the importance of healthy eating/living more and more,
sure I eat cookies, but it’s all about moderation. What goes into my mouth
mostly ends up on my thighs now <le sigh>, so I try to be more self-aware. But it’s not
just the weight, I want to live long enough to give great grandchildren
cookies, so I need to take care of myself to make sure I’m around.

One of the things I’ve been doing lately to help me jump start my day is making a green smoothie after my morning workout with fairlife. Sometimes in lieu of my smoothie, I have a protein shake, but when I don’t, I like knowing fairlife has 50% more protein and 30% more calcium without adding protein or calcium powders and also 50% less sugar (versus normal milk).
I thought I would share two of my favorite green smoothie recipes with y’all today. When I start my day off with good food, I make healthier decisions throughout the day because I’ve started on the right footing! (Not to say french fries don’t still tempt me! And I eat them a lot too!
Smoothie #1: Grown Up Strawberry Banana (pictured)
1/2 cup strawberries
1 banana
1 cup fairlife (I find ours at Kroger)
1 cup baby spinach
1 tsp vanilla extract
*I added a fourth cup of blueberries to the recipe in the photo
Smoothie #3: Tropical Cleanse Smoothie
We buy all of our ingredients on Sunday nights and prep the
blender for blending the night before so it’s super easy to just plop it on the
mount, blend and go. Plus, they are delicious and healthy, so it’s a win win. Plus, I find that when we make smoothies, we waste less produce because if it starts to go bad, we just blend it!

And also, don’t worry if your smoothie isn’t “green.” Many of the concoctions I love are more of a blueish/green color and sometimes even brown! They are still delicious!
