There are so many days I thank God above for giving us this opportunity to move to North Carolina and allow Aaron to train at an amazing hospital while also letting us meet new people who are from all walks of life and from all over the country/world. But with that said, there are also times that I miss the slower pace of life back home, miss drinking wine with my college girlfriends, and miss my family. Holidays are hard and the month of May is ESPECIALLY hard. Literally everyone in my family has birthdays in May (i.e. dad, both sisters and both nieces) and many of my best friends. Plus, Mother’s Day is in May which means I miss out on the memories made during each of these dates. That’s why I put so much value in the cards I send home.
My mom is always the kind of mom that tells us not to spend a lot and says that a phone call is always a great “gift”, but I secretly know she loves a thoughtful card. She is such a sentimental person and she always mentions how much she loves getting my cards in the mail and luckily Walgreens makes it easy for me to pick up a great Hallmark Signature cards that I always know she’ll love.
Since we’ve lived in NC, I send snail mail cards a lot – I love how receiving a simple card in the mail can completely turn someone’s day around and that’s why even though I know my mom wishes I could be there for Mother’s Day, picking a card is that much more important. I literally read so many cards before picking one and when I finally do, I always write something additional to let her (or whomever) know how important they she is to me. She is one of my biggest fans and if I’m half the mom she was, I’ll consider myself a great mom one day.
I always know that regardless of the gift, whether it be flowers, dish towels (she actually asks for those), or a piece of jewelry, that the card is what means the most to her because it has my words written in it for her to read when she needs a reminder of how much I love her/miss her. So while I wish I could give my mom a big hug for Mother’s Day, for this Sunday, a #hallmarkatwalgreens card will just have to do.
Are you a card person? I save a lot of mine. Definitely not what “The Life Changing Magic of Tiding Up” recommends, but we all need little reminders that we are loved now and again. (I may or may not still have a shoe box of written notes from high school because I’m that sentimental).
P.S. I love you mom and Happy Birthday Dad and Kendall!

I love this post! It’s always important to recognize those fabulous women who raised us 🙂 – everyday! But especially on a day like Mother’s Day.

This is a hard month for me as well not being “home” with my family to celebrate birthdays and especially Mother’s Day. I’m not much of a card person but I do always send a little something to show that I’m thinking of them.
