If you follow me on snapchat (welchie24), you know we’ve been working on our patio quite a bit lately. And by me, I mean my husband and his friend installed some wood and hung some twinkle lights, so basically now I’m working on it and by that I mean accessorizing. I’m super excited to share the finished project with you soon, but before then, today I wanted to share this simple DIY that cost less than $30 to make 4. You may have seen these DIY Wine Bottle Tiki torch somewhere, but I think they are great. They help repel mosquitoes and offer another source of lighting for summer nights – what’s not to love?
I literally got everything I needed for this DIY wine bottle tiki torch either at the small hardware store down the street, so if my local ACE has it, chances are yours does too! You will need/to do the following:
- Drink wine (check!). Remove all labeling/stickers, etc. This stuff works amazingly.
- Aquarium or small rocks. I got a 3lbs bag of these and it was plenty!
- Wicks
- Tiki Fluid
- Coupling
- Teflon Tape
- Roping
Then following the below steps to assemble your DIY wine bottle tiki torch:
- After you’ve cleaned your wine bottles, use a funnel to fill about 1/4 the way with rocks. This helps prevent your torches from knocking over.
- If you should choose to wrap in rope, do so prior to filling with fuel. I decided to wrap mine after I filled them, which was fine, but I needed to be more careful not to spill.
- Slide the wicks through the coupling. I ordered the recommended 1/2 by 3/8 couplings and they didn’t fit in my spout. I then took my wine bottle into the store and “tried on” a few until I found one that fit. I would recommend doing the same. I had a very nice gentlemen helping me who asked no odd questions as to why I had empty wine bottles with me.
- Use the Teflon tape to wrap around your metal piece. This make a seal and means if the bottle knocks over, the tight grip wont allow fluid to spill.
- Fill with fluid, light and you’re ready to tiki!
These wine bottle tiki torch work amazingly for us because while I love the tiki torches you put in the ground, our deck is elevated, so that’s not really an option. We can sit these around the banister while we sit on the patio and they don’t get in our way. We also don’t have to worry about the dogs knocking them over which is amazing. Definitely don’t skip the rocks since this helps to keep them weighted down.
Oh those summer nights, cue this song. I can’t wait until this deck is finished so Aaron and I can put on some Frank, grill out and enjoy a glass of wine. What more could you possibly want?
Happy Friday y’all. I hope your weekends are a fabulous mix of productive and relaxing! Thanks for reading!
