If you’ve been following my blog for a while, you know we recently moved!. When we found this house and it had gorgeous refinished hardwood floors, y’all know I was SO thrilled. But then we moved in and I realized, I have no idea how to care for hardwood floors. So, researching I went. I thought y’all might need some insight, too! So below are the DO’s and DON’Ts that I’ve found from research, friends’ advice, etc.
How to Care for Hardwood Floors:
DON’T:
- Don’t use steam mops. This can cause some serious damage and it’s a big no-no! We love our STAINMASTER™ Spray Mop Kit instead!
- Don’t use oil, soaps, furniture polish etc. This can create a build-up which does the opposite of cleaning!
- Don’t use a vacuum with the beater bar running (again, why we love our gentle STAINMASTER Spray Mop; the pad is so soft and easily washable!)
- Don’t use rugs with rubber backing. It can get stuck or worse, mess up the finish!
DO:
- Do use pads as many places as you can! Hardwood floors scratch easily and since we have dogs, it’s inevitable that they will scratch. But, to minimize this, we put furniture pads on all the legs of the furniture touching the hardwood (or any that would be scooted!).
- Do sweep before mopping. This helps get all the dust and debris off the floor so you’re not just moving it around.
- DO use a cleaning product you know and trust. We love the STAINMASTER Spray Mop Kit. We picked this up at our local Walmart and it’s SO easy to use. You literally assemble, pop the Multi-Surface Refill Cartridge in and get mopping. The sponge pad is easy to throw into the laundry once it gets super dirty and voila, mopped floors so easy!
- Along with my first point, do placemats near the entryways or over large pieces of furniture to prevent scratches!
- Do wipe up spills right away! The faster the better! Sometimes I just pop our STAINMASTER Spray Mop Kit out and zoom over the spill as opposed to getting on my hands and knees.
All in all, these tips have helped me a ton along with our STAINMASTER Spray Mop Kit. Get ‘cha one at Walmart. You won’t regret it!
If you have any tips for me on how to care for hardwood floors that I’m missing, I would love to know! Sharing is caring!!
