I firmly believe that the kitchen is the heart of any home. I spend most of my days inside the kitchen as a mother and when it’s clean, I feel better about life in general. Something about having the kitchen clean makes me want to have the rest of the house clean (I just need more time in the day, right?). I also feel like it’s the room in the house that can get the messiest the quickest. Sanity is so important to me when it comes to running a household. So for me, that means making sure I keep our kitchen clean (or as clean as I can day in and day out!). And since there is a method to my madness of keeping our kitchen clean, I thought I’d share my tips today for how to keep your kitchen clean (just in case you think like me or struggle with a clean kitchen).
How to Keep your Kitchen Clean:
1. Find a multipurpose cleaner you love: I use Bon Ami Powder Cleanser in so many different ways. From cleaning the sink and fridge, to scrubbing my pots and pans, etc. It’s perfect because it’s versatile, which means I get to save time (and money). I literally sprinkle it all around the places I use it and then get to work cleaning away. Plus, as a mom with young babies, I hate using harsh chemicals in our home. Bon Ami is free of those but still gets the job done, which I love! Bonus, too, I use it in our bath!
2. Run the dishwasher frequently: If the dishwasher is clean and empty, then that means dishes don’t pile up in the sink because there is a place to put them. It seriously takes all of five minutes to empty the dishwasher, so it’s always the first thing I do in the morning while I wait for my coffee to brew. Just put some tunes on Alexa and whistle while you work (or sing, I can’t whistle).
3. Have one or two SMALL “junk” areas: This seems counterproductive but I feel like no matter what, there will always be “stuff” that is out. I have one small kitchen drawer for miscellaneous items (i.e. stamps, pens, giftcards, advil, etc.) and then we have a small bread bowl on the counter that acts as our drop spot. In this bowl, keys, chargers, etc. go so they aren’t thrown all about the kitchen or laying on the counters.
4. Schedule a deep clean on a schedule: Once a season, I completely deep clean the kitchen. This includes cleaning/organizing all the cabinets and shelves and cleaning the fridge (I love using Bon Ami for this). If I do it that often, I try my best to maintain it which means everything has a place always.
5. 5-minute sweep each night: Every night before bed, I do a 15-minute sweep of our home (you can read more about that here) which means the kitchen gets about 5 minutes. It’s so easy to do it and it means I wake up to a clean kitchen 99.9% of the time. I’ll remove debris on the kitchen counters that doesn’t belong and then load and start the dishwasher. If pans need cleaned still from dinner, Bon Ami to the rescue.
You guys, you might be reading this and thinking that this seems too time consuming but the truth is, these tips take a matter of minutes in my day and keep me sane! Plus, the heart of my home is clean which means momma is always (ha, or mostly) happy!
Now, you know it…coffee.
