Children’s Books About Diversity
#1. Little Dreamers: A book that celebrates notorious women in history.
#2. Little Feminist: These books are some of Penelope’s favorite. They are SO quick to read and P loves picking them out from her bookshelf.
#3. A is for Awesome: We just got this book and it’s adorable. Like a few of the others, it celebrates famous women in history, but I love that it includes modern women like Oprah, Tina Turner and Beyonce.
#4. It’s Okay to Be Different: We don’t own this one, but it has great reviews.
#5. The Big Umbrella: A book about inclusivity and welcoming everyone to be under the “big umbrella.”
#6. Black Heroes: No description needed.
#7. Dream Big Little One: another women in history (but honestly, are there ever enough?)
#8. Seeds and Trees: A book about the power of words and the affect they can have on one another.
#9. Scribble Stones: This sounds like an ADORABLE story about spreading love and kindness to everyone.
#10. ABC What Can She Be?: I LOVE this book because yes, it talks about diversity, but it shows not only people of different colors, but those with disabilities and religious beliefs. So good.
Reading your kiddos books like these are a great start, but it’s just that, a start. Even while we’re reading we try to educate Penelope by pointing out different parts of stories, characteristics, etc. and making sure she knows all people are beautiful, smart, etc. We’re still learning, too and I’ll continue to educate myself on ways I can make sure our daughter treats all people equally and with respect and love because that’s how we change the world, by changing our future generation.
And I’ll get off my soapbox friends, but I do want to say that racism will not be tolerated on this site.
I’ll continue to share insightful posts when I feel I have something to say, as I said, I definitely still have A LOT to learn and I plan to do a bit everyday over my morning coffee.
