Happy Tuesday friends! How was y’alls weekend? My mom and dad came for the day/night Saturday and just hung out because Aaron worked all weekend. Penelope just adores my parents and they are really good grandparents, so I welcome their visits. My dad has been having some health issues, so I’ll take any and all visits I can get right now, especially during a global pandemic (We pretty much go nowhere and they don’t either. We also do not hug, etc. so as “socially distanced” as possible (with some visits still thrown in).
I’m so excited to show you our mini bathroom makeover today which is Penelope’s bathroom. It’s a Jack n Jill bathroom, so there is another room on the other side of the bath, which makes the space slightly awkward thanks to all the doors, but #firstworldproblems. When we first moved in, this bathroom was fine, but kind of meh for my taste. It had a BIG sliding mirror with medicine cabinets behind it and rustic type fixtures which honestly, just didn’t go with our aesthetic.
So before we get too into the details, let’s look at how this room looked when we moved in:
Jack n Jill Bathroom
First and foremost, getting those mirrors down and the medicine cabinets behind them out happened and then Aaron was able to patch the drywall and hang the shiplap from Lowes. We thought about making our own faux shiplap, but for such a small space, we decided to spend the money and just go with primed pre-made. After that was hung, we filled the holes and I got to painting both the walls in this room (the whole house was this buttery yellow color) and painting the vanity (tutorial for vanity painting later this week).
I really wanted something to transition from Penelope’s room well, so I picked a greeny-blue (pulled from her wallpaper’s green on the floral). It’s a really pretty color called Jack Pine from Benjamin Moore. For the walls, I choose Benjamin Moore Simply White and to be honest, it kind of reflects a little green in the space from the vanity. I may repaint it later, but for now it’s staying. I also think the black and white photos are throwing me off (I’ll probably swap them with the color versions because I adore seeing baby P and all her chunk).
I wanted to mix metals in this space because the shower hardware is silver and we just had it repaired, so it wasn’t leaving. I plan to do a post on mixing metals soon, but in this space I choose brushed brass and stainless steel and it’s one of my favorite metal combos. The mirrors look black, but they’re actually just inlay mirrors with a thick border, and the metal outer is also stainless (pictures can be deceiving). I choose these fun globe fixtures as well with matching faucets and drains.
Oddly, this vanity has no drawers, so for now until we build something below, we keep P’s toothbrush and other necessities (bath cups, hair barrettes and soap/lotion) right on top of the counter. There is a small linen closet across from the toilet, so later when kids are sharing this bathroom there will be plenty of space, but it helps keeping everything out right now so P can help get things herself, etc. I just ordered these towels from the Mackenzie-Childs Barn Sale for the hand towel hooks, so looking forward to adding a little fun to the space.
With everything we did: shiplap, new mirrors, new hardware, paint for vanity and walls, faucets, drywall, etc. I think we came in probably around $1100 for this project. So not super cheap, but also way less than a full reno and I absolutely love it. It honestly goes to show that renovations don’t have to be complete gut jobs, you can change so much without getting into the nitty gritty. One day, I’d like to completely switch out the vanity and flooring, but for now, it’s 110% better than how it began. So as with every post, here is what is still to do in this space:
- We’d like to possibly replace the two hinged doors from bedrooms with pocket doors
- New Vanity eventually
- New flooring eventually
- New paint? Let me know if you think I should pick something more white than this creamy “white.”
- Switch out black and white artwork for colored artwork
Not too much in this space! Next, I want to do a mini makeover to our master bath (which has the same mirrors)! You can see Penelope’s Room, Our Mudroom, Living Room and Entry Way reveals by clicking the links of visiting the Home Decor tab on my blog.
