Hi friends, and happy Wednesday. Most of you already probably have your Christmas tree up and looking wonderful, but if you don’t that’s okay, too! I always get a lot of questions on my tree decor, so I thought I’d put together a post today to share some Christmas tree decorating tips and tricks for how I decorate my tree (nothing too complicated, just some general rules of thumbs I go by).
This year, we have 5 trees total and they all look very different, but the star of the show is definitely our family room tree. I’ve never had a 12foot tree before since we’ve never had vaulted ceilings, but wow, was this tree a labor of love. We started off with a plain BCP Products 12 foot Christmas tree that was beautiful, but lacking some flocking in my opinion. I actually flocked this tree myself by using this product – it definitely was not difficult, but it was most certainly messy. If you want to know more about this process, I’m happy to share!
Once the tree was flocked, fluffed and assembled, the fun part was next…decorating. Mackenzie-Childs sent some beautiful ornaments and embellishment sticks and sprays, and I could not be more in love with how it all came together. It’s literally my Mackenzie-Childs dream tree and I love how it’s neutral enough while still being very MC with the Courtly Check embellishments and ribbons. So, if you’re feeling the needs to spruce up your tree, here are some little guidelines I follow when decorating our trees for the holidays.
Christmas Tree Decorating Tips
- Pick a theme or color scheme first and foremost. I get that you may be using family ornaments of all colors, but your larger embellishments like ribbon/sprays, etc. can follow suite with your decor.
- Ribbon– lots and different sizes. While I used two different Mackenzie-Childs ribbons, I also used this mesh ribbon in a black/gold combo to take up more space. I like to ribbon my tree first and then go in and “fill” the areas lacking. If you need assistance with tree ribbons, I have a tutorial here.
- Use sticks, sprays and other embellishments: I love adding items like these floral sprays into a tree to create dimension. The Mackenzie-Childs ones are stunning, but most holiday decor stores sell items that I’ve used on other trees in our home. When using them, I kind of zigzag them around the tree so they flow from the top to the bottom. I also like to purchase in odd numbers so that everything isn’t “too” balanced.
- Ornaments Small and Large: Make sure you’re diversifying your ornaments in size, especially on a large tree like a 12+ foot. I like to put the larger ornaments on first and then fill in with smaller ones where there are gaps and holes. I picked up some large round ornaments at our local craft store this year to compliment the Mackenzie-Childs smaller globe ornaments.
- The more the merrier: So unless you’re going for a minimal tree (like we have in our bedroom), I say the more decor the better to get it looking professionally decorated.
Voila, you’re done with a few simple tips! Of course, this is all a matter or personal taste, so that’s okay if you don’t like it! Some people love family decorated trees, or no ornaments at all and that’s A-OK. You have to do what works best for you and your home! Since we put up so many Christmas trees this year, all of them have a different vibe and I love them all individually for different reasons!
Don’t forget, you can view all of my gift guides by heading to the menu bar “Holiday Gift Guides” and selecting what category you’re shopping for. Super easy, if you have any questions or are looking for anything in particular, let me know!
And now I’m off to finish a small, but fun little project we’ve been working on and will share more of soon! And since it’s almost noon, coffee, coffee, coffee. Thanks for reading friends, I hope your holiday season so far has been merry!
