It’s not too late friends. It’s only mid-September and technically summer doesn’t end for a few more days. So, if you don’t have your cozy fall decor out yet, no worries. I just posted my first fall decor post here, so see, you’re not even that far behind me and I do this for a living. 🙂
But before I go into depth on fall decor and how I achieve a cozy look, I want to admit something:
I don’t love holiday decor.
SAY WHAT?!? Well, what I should say is I didn’t used to. I used to buy all the holiday items and throw them in my house and it just looked cluttered (my worst nightmare) and definitely not cohesive. But you know what? Perfecting fall decor (or any holiday decor) doesn’t mean buying every pumpkin on the store shelves, or every branch, etc. It means incorporating items you already have, together with some fall items that inspire you and resemble fall instead of screaming it. Sure, I love pumpkins, but I also love textures (velvets, jute, etc.). I love signs that say cute fall things, but I also love big vases I can use for any holiday in a muted (fall like colors) that I can coordinate with different fall or winter branches. See where I’m going? So here are the things I’m filling my fall decor tank with this season:
- Pumpkins. Duh. I personally like gathering them in all different textures. For me, fall is all about cozy textures.
- Brass items. I”m a fan of brass items year round, in fact, they are all throughout our home. But, I also find them very cozy and fitting for fall. If you don’t have any brass in your home, I recommend starting with some vintage or new brass candlesticks, you’ll be surprised how much you’ll use them in holiday decorating.
- Cozy Blankets in warm neutral colors.
- Velvet. I love velvet curtains, but since many people don’t switch their curtains every season, I suggest pillow covers, throw blankets or accents decor items (like a pumpkin!).
- Fall foliage. One of the best ways to incorporate a season it with some fall foliage. I go to a local craft store, buy a few branches and then stick them in a large muted toned pot (like this). Then, when the next holiday comes, I just switch my branches out to something more suitable.
- A fall wreath. I put one on both sides of our door interior and exterior.
- Woven baskets to stuff with said cozy blankets, pumpkins or pillows in. Again, it’s all about texture.
- Fall signs. I do think you can over do word signs, but I still like sprinkling a few here and there. I even love layering small ones on bookshelves, etc.
- Pillows in all different textures (cotton, velvet, etc.).
- Amber glass. Just like the big textured pots, amber glass can create beautiful aesthetic to home decor. I love using amber glass for fall because of the rich golden color.
Just remember, it doesn’t have to be in the fall aisle of the home decor store, it just has to be in the right textures, color tones, etc. I can’t stress texture, layers and coloring in decor enough (more on that later). You can view last year’s fall home decor here.
And now, coffee and decorating friends. Make it a great day.
