I was having a chat with my friend the other day about what money pits homes can be sometimes. Homes are investments (and most of the time great investments), but there always seems to be work or projects that need doing (catch my drift?). If you remember, we purchased our home from the bank and it had sat vacant for years before we moved in, meaning it needed A LOT of work. While we have accomplished SO much with blood, sweat and tears (literally, all three things), we still have so much we want to do to our current home, but we can’t do any of it if it isn’t operating where it should be. Have you ever had to fix something that wasn’t fun? For example, when we moved in we got a new roof and new drainage lines…to me, that money HAD to be spent for the house, but it wasn’t fun money to spend. I’d rather paint, build something or purchase something that brings me joy or I can visibly admire. I know unexpected expenses come up with home ownership, but we’ve found if we’re proactive about home care, it helps keep everything moving and grooving as should be, so today, I wanted to share our Summer Home Check List with y’all!
You’ll notice, I really hit home on heating and air conditioning equipment care. It’s something we have serviced twice yearly, but we also change out the air filters seasonally. Our HVAC is original to the home, which means, it’s most likely on its last leg, but with professionals like Columbus Worthington Air, we’ve been able to keep it functioning perfectly. The technicians that Columbus Worthington Air sends over have always been extremely knowledgeable and polite and the detailed information they provide is A+. Most people wait until there is a problem before they “fix” something, but running regular tune ups on areas of your home can be super beneficial. For example, he found an area this past week on our AC system that wasn’t quite working correctly and so thanks to the air conditioning service tune-up, we were able to remedy the problem before we lost cool air in the 90 degree heat.
For another area on the check list, we also trust the plumbing side of things with ARS/Rescue Rooter of Columbus and routinely have our water heater flushed once yearly. I actually just learned this, but if you don’t flush your water heater regularly, it can cause sediment build which can reduce the quality of water and the lifespan of your heater. This needs to be done once yearly, so we opt to do it in the summer, but you could choose anytime. Again, best customer service, John, our plumber, kindly checked all our drains and faucets and recommended problems which were located.
I know a few items are more “preferences,” like mulch, paint touch ups, etc. but Aaron and I were raised to really take pride in our homes and the appearance of them. I know that’s not a priority for everyone, but I’ve found touching up paint here and there, or pulling weeds/mulching every year, really helps the longevity of most things. For instance, if you keep avoiding paint touch ups, etc. eventually the whole area needs repainted which could cost WAY more in the long run!
Honestly, even though it seems like a long “seasonal list,” it’s not. For starters, having the HVAC and plumbing serviced is basically just a call or online appointment which takes no time at all. The other action items can be done slowly during down time or even on a sunny weekend.
So, get started! Give ARS/Rescue Rooter and Columbus Worthington Air a call today and while you wait for your scheduled plumbing of HVAC service in Columbus, Ohio, get checking other items off your to-do list so that once it’s all done you can take a step back and feel super accomplished (and enjoy summer?!).
Speaking of which, I just made a giant iced coffee and I am going to go enjoy it on the porch!
